A Chance Encounter; A life Restored, A promise to Pay it Forwad
In the bustling heart of Nairobi, beyond the city skyline and behind the forgotten alleys of informal settlements, lived a young boy with his mother and 5 siblings.
Growing up, he worked hard in school and did everything he could.
Whenever classes ended, he would join his mother at her “kibanda” a small fruits and vegetables stall, helping her sell produce before returning home.
Life was difficult. But hope remained.
He excelled academically completing his high school education.
One by one, his friends left for university.
He and his brothers stayed behind, they understood the reality at home.Â
Determined to create his own path, he would secure his first job as a field researcher. The pay was modest, but to him he believed he could slowly save enough for university education.
But his mother had other plans…
…She asked him to put aside his dream and instead help support his younger siblings.
He struggled with the decision. He was disappointed. Or perhaps resentful.
He could not understand why his dream had to wait while everyone else’s seemed to move forward.
Then one chilly morning, his mother called him into her room.
She looked at him and spoke words that would remain with him
She spoke in luo language “Nyathina, akya kaka dhi bet, to gimangeyo, kaka piny yawre okinyi, chieng ni dhi e skul, to sani rit oweteni ma pod tin.“
“My son, I don’t know how, but as sure as the sun comes up, you will go to university someday, for now, I want you to take care of your younger siblings.”
Looking into her eyes, he felt the conviction he could not explain.
And in that moment, he let the dream go. Not because he stopped believing in it. But because he believed in her.
Two years later, tragedy would fall. The tree that had held the nests together was no more.
His mother would pass away after a long battle with cancer. The matriarch had fallen. The most difficult part of his life and his siblings. Life was moving from crisis to a catastrophe, a cascade of setbacks. The world seemed dark and without hope. The Young boy and his 5 siblings became total orphans having lost their father a decade before.
No roadmap. No safety net. Only each other and a hope for a better tomorrow.Â
And so life had to move on…
Couple of months later he would secure his second job at a curios and art gallery shop inside a Nairobi hotel.
Then came a seemingly ordinary morning in September 2013.
Among the guests who entered the shop was a Professor from the United.
Their interaction was brief. The kind of encounter that happens every day between strangers and is often forgotten as quickly as it begins. States.

The Turning Point
Before returning home, the professor purchased several pieces of artwork and requested assistance shipping them to the United States. Contacts were exchanged. The artwork arrived safely. Life moved on. An ocean, time and distance stood between them. Yet somehow, in the background, the connection remained.
Months and couple more years passed.
Until one evening that would change everything, forever.
The day is  April 7, 2015.
A date forever etched into memory. An email arrived. At first glance, it appeared no different from the many messages that had crossed his inbox before. But as he read the opening lines, his heart began to race.
The kind of feeling that makes your heart skip a beat.
With every line, every paragraph seemed to open into an abyss of wonder.
He became speechless. Tearful and overwhelmed beyond measure.
The professor had asked a question.
A question that remains etched in his memory and heart to this day.
A question that would alter the course of his life forever.
In the body text of the email, the question read :
“Would you allow me to become part of your educational journey?”
The professor is Dr. Francine Gray, (PhD.)
The young boy is David Henry Ochieng.
And this is the story of a Chance Encounter that transformed a life.
United States International University Africa (USIU-A)
In the days that followed, Dr. Gray committed to sponsoring David’s entire University Education at United States International University–Africa (USIU-Africa).
In that moment, the words of his late mother came rushing back.
“My son, I don’t know how, but as sure as the sun comes up, you will go to university someday….”
Years had passed since that conversation.
She was gone.
The dream to go to University, had been buried beneath responsibility, survival, and loss.
Yet here, from across an ocean, came an opportunity he never saw coming, and to top it, he would be joining one of the continent’s leading international universities, an institution he never would have imagined in his life he would ever come close to.
Some may call it fate, others may call it coincidence, but we call it Synchronicity.
In the face of adversity, hope was now a reality that could be felt.
And so the beautiful 4 years Journey Began, Dr Gray became his anchor, every step of the way, through mentorship, guidance and belief.
David would later Graduate with Bachelor of Science degree in International Business Administration, BSc. IBA) and Dr Gray with her long-time dear Friend Ms Nancy Gilmore, travelled miles away back to Nairobi to attend his graduation.

In the years that followed, David would later become an acomplished entrepreneur and the Founder and Creative Director of Kreative Hart Innovations, an experience, patio and design company dedicated to transforming spaces into memorable experiences.
Today, his work spans through consulting for leading hotels, malls, and restaurants across Nairobi and Capetown.
Yet one question continued to echo in his mind: If one person’s belief could transform his life, how many futures were waiting for someone to believe in them?
Those questions became a calling. A burning drive that led to formation of Synchronicity Africa.
A mission to extend to others what had once been given to him.
To this day, a percentage of the earnings generated through Kreative Hart Innovations is dedicated to advancing the mission of Synchronicity Africa;
Creating pathways of hope through education sponsorships, mentorship, mental wellness initiatives, and community outreach for disadvantaged youth and children in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
But what began as a personal commitment to pay it forward became a growing movement belonging to everyone who believes one opportunity can change a life if not Lives.
Dr Gray continues to guide our founder David and support him, mentoring him throughout the whole process within and outside of  Synchronicity Africa.
