A Chance Encounter; Hope Restored
In the bustling heart of Nairobi, beyond the city skyline and behind the forgotten alleys of informal settlements, lived a young boy with his 5 siblings and their mother.
After school, David would join his mother at her small kibanda, helping sell fruits and vegetables. Determined to change things at home, he worked hard in school, scoring very high grades in his highs school education.Â
One by one, his friends left for university, but he stayed behind, the financial reality at home was already overbearing to his mother.
He started working as a research assistant. The pay was modest, but he believed he could slowly save enough eventually for university.
But his mother had other plans…
She asked him to put aside his dream and instead support his younger siblings.
He struggled with the decision, he was disappointed, or perhaps resentful.
He could not understand why his dream had to wait while everyone else’s seemed to move forward.
Then one chilly morning, his mother called him into her room. She looked at him and spoke words that would remain with him for so long.
 In Luo, she said ;
“Nyathina, gimang’eyo, kaka chieng yawre okinyi, chieng ni dhi e skul, to sani, akwayi irit oweteni ma pod tin.“
“My son, I don’t know how, but as sure as the sun comes up, you will go to university someday, for now, I want you to take care of your younger siblings.”
Looking into her eyes, he felt the conviction he could not explain.
And in that moment, he let the dream go; not because he stopped believing in it, but because he believed in her.
Two years later, tragedy would fall.Â
The tree that had held the nests together for so long was no more.
His mother would pass away after battle with cancer; the most difficult part of his life and his siblings.Â
Life was moving from crisis to a catastrophe, a cascade of setbacks, the world seemed dark and without hope. He and his 5 siblings became total orphans having lost their father a decade before.
No roadmap, no safety net, only each other and a hope for a better tomorrow.

The Quantum leap
Couple of months later he would secure another job at an art gallery in a Nairobi hotel.
Then came one chilly afternoon in September 2013.
Among the guests who entered the shop were two elderly women from United States.
Their interaction was brief. The kind that happens every day and is often forgotten.
They bought several art pieces and requested David to assist with shipping to the United States. They exchanged contacts and eventually returned home, couple of weeks later, the artworks arrived safely in Los Angeles, California.Â
The two women were Dr. Francine Gray and her long time best friend, Nancy Gilmore.
Months had passed, then years.
Time and distance stood between them, but somehow the connection remained.
Life was oscillating between survival and responsibilities, yet the dream of university came back calling somewhere in David’s mind, he began applying to a few institutions.
Coincidentally, during one of their conversations, Dr. Gray became curious about the education system in Kenya. She wanted to understand how it worked and the different learning pathways.Â
David shared what he knew, and life continued, couple of months passed.
Until one evening, when an email popped, the evening of March 7, 2015; a date forever etched in his memory; it was a long email message from Dr Gray.
At first, it appeared to be like another incoming message from their previous conversations.
But as he began reading, his heart began to race; the kind of feeling that makes it skip a beat. Every line and paragraph seemed to open into something profound; an abyss of wonder.
Something that would eventually alter the cause of his life, forever. Â
Dr. Gray revealed that the reason she earlier inquired about the education system in Kenya, was so that she could offer to support David’s university journey until he earned his degree.
The world seemed to stand still, he became speechless, tearful and overwhelmed beyond measure.
In that moment, the words of his late mother came rushing back.
“…My son, I don’t know how, but as sure as the sun comes up, you will go to university someday….”
Years had passed since that conversation, she was gone; and the dream to go to University had been buried beneath responsibility, survival, and loss.
United States International University Africa (USIU-A)
Among the Universities David had initially shared with Dr Gray, was United States International University-Africa in Nairobi,Â
Dr. Gray then revealed that she had in fact earned her doctorate from United States International University, in the United States;  another beautiful moment of synchronicity unfolding. The USIU-Africa in Nairobi, became the University Dr Gray would then enroll David to earn his degree. But it didn’t end there; she made a trip back to Nairobi, together with her best friend Nancy; in a symbolic and most memorable gesture in his life, accompanying David and enrolling him into the University, just as a mother would to his son on day one in school.
Some may call it fate, others may call it destiny; we call it Synchronicity.
In the face of adversity, hope became a living reality that he could now feel in his veins.
David would later Graduate with Bachelor of Science degree in International Business Administration, and yet again, Dr Gray with her long-time best friend Ms Nancy Gilmore, made a third trip, miles away, back to Nairobi, to attend and celebrate his graduation.
In the face of deep privation, his life had gotten a new meaning; the boy who once stood beside his mother’s kibanda, watching others leave for university, and almost drowning in a pool of hopelessness, had finally gotten a new life, his face could now beam with rays of sunshine.
Yet one question continued to echo in his mind: If one person’s belief could transform his life, how many more people like him were still out there, buried in a pit of despair?
Those questions became a calling. A burning drive that would lead to formation of Synchronicity Africa.
A mission to extend to others the opportunity that once visited him in his most vulnerable years.
Together, with a group of his friends, a personal commitment became a growing movement, belonging to everyone who believes one opportunity could change a life if not Lives.
Today, David is an entrepreneur and founder of Kreative Hart Innovations; an experience and patio design company in Nairobi; dedicated to transforming hotels, malls, expos and exhibitions into memorable experiences.
Dr. Gray has remained a guiding presence in our founder’s life, through mentorship, friendship, and a bond shaped by love, admiration, gratitude, and deep honor.
